Pain vs. Love
What's the more powerful motivator?
Hey friend,
You’ve probably heard the adage “People don’t change until they are in enough pain to tolerate the pain of change” or something like that, right? We all have powerful motivators in our lives.
I was on a podcast a few weeks ago called “Most People Don’t…” and the host asked me that question. He said, “what’s something that most people don’t…..?” and my short answer is in the video clip https://youtu.be/cMFeCNFHKeI and you can catch the whole 30min episode on my channel.
The long and short of it is that people will start to change when they are in enough pain that they can’t take the status quo any longer. Then they only change enough to get out of pain, but not enough to get all the way to the results they’re wanting. That’s because at that point, only love is powerful enough to overcome the pain of change. And sadly, most people don’t make the switch from pain to love as the powerful motivator. Consequently, they get mediocre results, and wonder what’s wrong with them that their friends got success but they didn’t.
I hear it all the time. “My friend managed to lose 30lbs and I can’t get past 10!” Or, “my college buddy is making twice what I’m making and I got better grades!” Or, “I’m doing the same thing as my friend/brother/cousin and not getting the results he got, what’s wrong with me?”
Changing something big in your life is hard, and because it’s hard, it requires a lot of love to carry you through. Pain has a finite amount of energy to motivate, because the further you get from the original pain, the less motivation it has. You MUST change that one thing if you expect to get all the results you’re looking for. I explain it better in that short video.
